NE567: GOSPEL OF MATTHEW (English text) (4 Units: 161 hours). David Parris.
DESCRIPTION: This course will focus on detailed exegesis of portions of the English text of the Gospel of Matthew. Emphasis will be on the exegesis, interpretive history and problems, theological understanding and practical significance of the text.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of this course: 1) the student should be able to explain the content and structure of the English text of Matthew, 2) the student’s skills as biblical interpreters will be strengthened through reading and critical interaction via historical, cultural and literary methods, 3) the student will have thoughtfully engaged the theological and ethical issues raised by the author and the implications of these concepts to their situation, and 4) the student should have the groundwork laid for their teaching Matthew in various contexts.
COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three-hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours.
REQUIRED READING: 1200 total number of pages required.
Read Matthew in the TNIV or NRSV and another good modern translations (NASB, NKJV, NET, etc.).
