GM578: MINISTERIO URBANO HISPANO (Hispanic Urban Ministry) (4 Units). Michael Mata.


DESCRIPTION: The course uses a multi-disciplinary approach designed to enhance the student's understanding of the complexities and possibilities of doing ministry in the urban context, particularly working with marginalized communities. The professor, guest lecturers, media and site visits will expose students to a variety of perspectives emanating from social/cultural studies, missiology, and theology, in search of an integrative model of ministry in the city. The course involves doing theological reflections and designing practical ways of developing ministries geared towards effective social transformation in the communities.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Completion of the course will allow students to (1) assess and analyze their multi-cultural urban environment for ministry potential; (2) understand of the complexities of urban religious leadership; (3) develop an appropriate plan/strategy for engaging congregations in a particular urban setting.

COURSE FORMAT: This hybrid course meets face-to-face for one week for a total of 30 contact hours, with additional online teaching and learning requirements prior to the intensive and throughout the quarter. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

Understanding the Urban Context and Complexities of Religious Leadership:

  1. A 15-minute class presentation on an assessment of an urban community (10%) [5-8 hours]

  2. Five reflection papers (750-800 words) on the assigned readings (20%) [10-15 hours per reading assignment]

  3. Weekly posts (250-400 words) reflecting on assigned reading and weekly response to a classmate’s post (150-200 words) - (20%). [ 2-3 hours posting/week]

  4. A final reflection paper (750 - 800 words) on the learnings from the course (10%). [1 - 2 hours]

  5. Report (250- 500 words) on a site visit to an established urban ministry (5%) [2-3 hours]

Developing an Viable Ministry Plan for an Urban Community

  1. A 10-page final project that builds upon the learnings from the course into a viable ministry plan for an identified urban community (35%). [15-20 hours preparing & writing]

PREREQUISITES: Spanish.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets MDiv core requirement in Missions (MIN 8). Also meets requirement for MDiv concentration in Multicultural Ministries (Hispanic Church Studies) and for MA in Multicultural Ministries (Hispanic Church Studies).
