ML582 A & B: CHARACTER, COMMUNITY, AND LEADERSHIP (A is 2 units, B is 2 units) Dr. Wilmer Villacorta, Assistant Professor of Intercultural Studies

DESCRIPTION: Students from around the globe will join faculty in dialogue around topics of character formation in community. The challenge of developing character as a foundation for leadership will be applied in students’ lives through reading, discussions, lectures, small group exercises, sharing of spiritual journey narratives, community meals, prayers and reflection. The work for this course sequence (4-units) spans 2 quarters. Part A comprises the pre-seminar work, in-class activities and post-seminar assignments. Students will meet on campus for one week for 1) an orientation to Fuller Seminary resources, the MAGL program and its learning components, 2) an opportunity to build deeper relationships with cohort members to achieve a more effective learning community; and 3) an introduction to the principles of character formation and leadership. Part B comprises post-seminar reading, writing, group dialogue and the final paper.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a result of this course sequence students will have:

1. Prepared for continuing studies at Fuller through an orientation to program resources

2. Celebrated further development of the cohort learning community with fellow students

3. Examined several models of character formation and applied at least one to the student’s life and ministry context

4. Examined several character formation issues that leaders face including calling and vocation

5. Explored the global cross-cultural context of Christian leadership today

6. Revised the MAGL Curriculum Sheet through conversations with the cohort advisor and cohort peers

COURSE FORMAT: ML582A will meet for the first week of a required two-week intensive on-campus residency for the MA in Global Leadership from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students will do pre-seminar, in-seminar and post-seminar assignments. ML582B will involve post-seminar readings and assignments, online connecting, and completion of the final paper after they return home.

1. Required Reading - 610 pages [34 hours] LO’s 3, 4 & 5.

2. Two 500-600-word (2-page) reading reports on Willard and Thrall, et al. pre-seminar (20% of grade). [4 hrs.] LO 3&4.

3. One 250-300-word journal response related to the Labberton book (10% of grade) [1 hr.] LO’s 3 & 4

4. Make an 8 to 10-minute oral “personal journey narrative” presentation to the class (33% of grade). [4 hrs.] LO’s 2 & 4

5. Attend and fully participate in class discussions and learning exercises during the one-week on-campus seminar (25% of grade) [35 hrs.] LO’s 1 to 6

6. Devotional reading report on Labberton (post seminar) (10% of grade) [1 ½ hrs] LO’s 2 & 4

7. Revise and adjust personal MAGL Curriculum Sheet based on advising meetings (2%). [½ hr] (LO 6)

4. Devotional Reading Report on Johnson (10% of grade) [4 hrs.] LO’s 2 & 4

5. A 3,750-4,000word (15 to 16-page) paper integrating the themes of the course (60% of grade) [32 hrs.] LO’s 3 &4

PREREQUISITES: This course sequence is only available to MA in Global Leadership students.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: This two-quarter sequence, ML582A and B, is part of the required MAGL cohort series of courses. NO AUDITORS.

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
