ML540: ADULT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT (4 units: 160 hours). Jeff Holck, DMiss, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Leadership.


DESCRIPTION: This course is an overview of adult leadership development (ALD) focusing on design and evaluation of ALD processes that have proven effective in mission and ministry. Includes an in-depth look at “Dialogue Education” (Jane Vella) as a practical means of facilitating adult learning. This course gives you tools to evaluate or design ALD processes using several techniques to analyze an actual field case.

LEARNING OUTCOMES (L.O.s): At some point in your ministry you are likely to need to evaluate or design an ALD process. Upon successful completion of this course, you will have:

  1. Examined several philosophical perspectives and definitions regarding leadership, adult leadership development, and evaluation.
  2. Identified several formal, non-formal and informal models of adult leadership development that have been used successfully.
  3. Analyzed variables affecting the learner, the adult leadership development process and desired outcomes using an eight-aspect design model.
  4. Investigated how adults learn best.
  5. Completed a detailed analysis or design of an adult leadership development process using a systems approach.

RELATIONSHIP TO PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: This course provides students with tools to evaluate or design ALD processes using several techniques to analyze an actual field case, which is consistent with the MAGL PLO “Graduates will implement a leadership development perspective that prioritizes character/spiritual formation.”

COURSE FORMAT: Conducted online, the ten weekly lessons align with Fuller's academic calendar. Students, the professor and teaching assistants will interact weekly through forums, reading responses, & writing assignments.

PREREQUISITES: This course sequence is only available to MA in Global Leadership students.
