NE527: NEW TESTAMENT EXEGESIS: GOSPEL OF LUKE (4 Units: 160 hours). Stephen E. Young.

DESCRIPTION: A close reading of selected passages in the Gospel of Luke, with special attention given to literary, socio-historical, and theological understandings of the first half of the Lukan narrative comprising the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will have demonstrated the ability (1) to interpret the Gospel of Luke within its socio-historical, literary, and canonical contexts; (2) to identify central issues in the critical study of the Gospel of Luke; (3) to articulate primary theological and ethical concerns of the Gospel of Luke; (4) to use Greek based language tools for interpreting the text; and (5) to interpret the Gospel of Luke for faithful use of Scripture in their own lives and ministries.

RELATIONSHIP TO PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: Through focused study of a particular biblical book or topic, students acquire deeper mastery of the interpretation of the Bible, taking into account its ancient and contemporary contexts, which is consistent with the SOT PLO “Students will have demonstrated competence in the practice of biblical interpretation for faithful use of Scripture in their own lives and ministries”(MDiv, MAT, MATM).

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Weekly reading (1,200 total number of pages) and brief PDF and video lectures. [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-3, 5.] [84 hours of reading and viewing].
  2. Weekly trans­lations of assigned texts from the Gospel of Luke, including lexical, grammatical and syntactical analysis. [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 4-5.] [10 hours].
  3. 350-word weekly forum initial posts and 100-word weekly forum replies based on a close reading of assigned pericopes from the Gospel of Luke (including relevant lexical, grammatical and syntactical comments based on the Greek) (15% [of which 5% is allocated to Greek work]). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-5.] [17 hours].
  4. 200-word weekly forum initial posts and 100-word weekly forum replies reflecting a careful reading of assigned portions from Luke’s narrative, and comparing one’s observations with at least one of the required commentaries (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-5.] [12 hours].
  5. Two Interpretive Working Papers on assigned texts (2 papers; 1,350 words each, or about 2 pages single-spaced) (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 4-5.] [11 hours preparation and writing].
  6. A critical book review on Johnson, Prophetic, or Kuhn, Kingdom or Rowe, Early Narrative (1,500-1,600 words, or 3-4 pages one-and-a-half spaced) (20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-3, 5.] [6 hours writing].
  7. Interpretive/research paper on an assigned topic from the Gospel of Luke (2,500 words, or 6 pages one-and-a-half spaced) (25%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-5.] [20 hours research and writing].
