MD532: UNDERSTANDING AND ENGAGING CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND ASSET BASED COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (4 Units: 160 hours). Mary Glenn.
DESCRIPTION: This course will explore and engage the theological, contextual and missional implications and engage in the application of the CCD (Christian Community Development) methodology based on the work of John Perkins and the ABCD (Asset Based Community Development) methodology developed by John McKnight and John Kretzman for the sustainable development and transformation of communities based on their resources, strengths, assets and potential rather their needs and deficits.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated (1) an understanding, integration and application of the key components of Christian Community Development and ABCD methodologies for community engagement and transformation in their community context including the role and mission of the church; (2) a critical assessment of the needs vs. gifts approach and an understanding and utilization of tools for exegeting and asset mapping their community; and (3) an understanding of community and personal identity, the ministry of God’s presence, reconciliation, and spirituality/theology of place.
RELATIONSHIP TO PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: This course will introduce students to one or more strategies for integrating theological and missiological content with life experience and context of the church and neighbors through engaging the CCD and ABCD methodologies, the ministry of God’s presence in the pursuit of personal and communal transformation which is consistent with the SIS PLO “ Students will have demonstrated critical thinking and integration skills in order to foster individual and social transformation” (MAICS). The emphasis on the role and mission of the church in community development and transformation is consistent with the SIS PLO “Graduates will participate in the mission of God and the ministries of the global Church from an evangelical missiological perspective.” This course may also contribute to various learning outcomes in the MAGL related to integrating theology and praxis in ministry and mission, and related to personal and community development and transformation (MAGL).
COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignments and assessment section. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, research and other assignments that promote active learning.

4. Fieldwork and asset mapping a neighborhood/community/zip code and write up/map of data collected (400 words) (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2, 3]. [10 hours].
5. One major project paper (signature assignment) applying and integrating the theories, theologies and skills of CCD and ABCD methodologies learned in class to a specific cultural community context. (3500 words) (40%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2, 3]. [35 hours].
