LG506: INTERMEDIATE HEBREW (4 Units: 160 hours/2 Units: 130 Hours). Christopher B. Hays.

DESCRIPTION: This course helps students gain increased competency in translating biblical Hebrew, with special attention to literary and poetic features, as well as the social a scribal contexts of the biblical authors. It also gives exposure to the diachronic phases of the language, such as Archaic and Late Biblical Hebrew, surveying changes in morphology, syntax, orthography, and phonology from an historical perspective. The course emphasizes how the history of the Hebrew language and our interpretations of the Old Testament are mutually informing.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students will have demonstrated (1) intermediate competency in translating biblical Hebrew; (2) the ability to identify and describe the major phases and dialects of ancient Hebrew; (3) the ability to translate texts from archaic to late periods of the language using standard reference works; (4) the ability to vocalize unpointed Hebrew texts, including both pre-exilic inscriptions and Qumran texts.

RELATIONSHIP TO PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: RELATIONSHIP TO PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: This course ensures that students have intermediate aptitude in Hebrew, so that they will be able to study the Old Testament in its original language. The course thus helps to build skill in interpreting the Old Testament, which contributes to the PLO, “Students will have demonstrated competence in the practice of biblical interpretation for faithful use of Scripture in their own lives and ministries” (MDiv)."

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once weekly for two hours in Online Live! format, i.e. facilitated by videoconferencing. Two additional hours per week will be occupied by posted video lectures and other directed learning activities, for a total of 40 instructional hours. Students are required to attend the scheduled class times via videoconference each week (see schedule and note for specifications). Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.
