ST544: ASIAN AMERICAN THEOLOGIES (4 Units: 160 hours). Daniel D. Lee.


DESCRIPTION: This course critically engages methodologies and approaches in Asian American theologies covering representative theologians and key issues. It will explore their operating philosophical, political, and cultural presuppositions as well as their existential and pastoral concerns. Students will be tasked to integrate the key insights and lessons from these theologies for their understanding of their own identity, theology, and ministry.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course students will demonstrate: (1) basic historical understanding of the development in Asian American theologies;(2) capacity to recognize intersectional aspectsof Asian American contexts, experiences, and writingsbased onrace/ethnic/gender/generational/class dynamics; (3) an ability to critical evaluate Asian American theologies;(4) practical application of Asian American theological ideas for discipleship, mission, andministry.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Instructional content – Videos, podcasts, and websites. (5% of final grade) [25 hours].
  2. 1015 pages of required reading (5% of final grade) [70 hours].
  3. 300-word weekly posts and two 100-word weekly replies (20% of final grade). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-3]. [25 hours, includes 10 hours of DLAs].
  4. Contextual theological analysis paper (20%). Choose from a number of experiences including church visits, sermon analysis, other Asian American events, etc., and write a 1,000 word theological reflection. [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 3-4] [10 hours].
  5. A 3000-word research paper (50% of final grade). [This assignment is related to learning outcome 1-4]. [30 hours].

PREREQUISITES: None. TM528 Asian American Identity and Ministry and some introductory theology courses strongly recommended.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Option to meet the TH4 requirement in the 120 MDiv Program and the 80 MAT Program (Fall 2015). Option to meet the C1 or C5 requirements in the 120 MDiv Program and 80 MATM Program (Fall 2015).

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
