MI531: DISCERNING AND MOBILIZING FOR MISSION AT URBANA (4 Units: 160 hours). Erik Aasland.


DESCRIPTION: This course will explore and engage the most pressing theological, contextual and missional issues in missions today as a follow up to the Urbana Conference. Students have the opportunity to delve more deeply into the themes of the conference through reading, writing, and reflection. The online forum will provide the opportunity to reflect with others on the readings, conference experience, and your own future plans.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated:

  1. Understanding of current issues in mission while reflecting on one’s own future goals as related to mission.
  2. Critical assessment and personal reflection on Urbana conference topics of discernment, justice, business as mission, globalization and Bible storying.
  3. Exploration of vocational calling and next steps in gaining experience as well as pursuing future ministry.
  4. Competency in carrying out interviews or facilitating group interaction for discernment and spiritual edification

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignment and assessment section. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.

REQUIRED READING: 910 pages (this includes 300 pages of readings agreed upon with the professor related to the final paper). If you have already read one of the required texts, please contact the professor to get an alternative title.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Reading a total of 890 pages. This is 590 pages of assigned reading and 300 additional pages from the recommended literature or other approved sources for the final paper. [56 hours].
  2. Class activities such as video lectures, PowerPoint presentations,etc. [20 hours].
  3. 250-word weekly forum posts (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-3] [10 hours].
  4. 250-word weekly forum responses (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1&2] [10 hours].
  5. Completion of three, 1,250 word essays (30%) [This assignment is related to learning outcome #4]. [30 hours].
  6. Please choose three: interview a missionary about an especially hard experience; lead a friend in a time of discerning prayer and reflection; facilitate a Bible storying session; attend an activity or visit the offices of a ministry engaged in social justice in your area (15%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #4] [10 hours of DLAs].
  7. Proposal for final paper [2 pages] (10%) [4 hours].
  8. A final paper based on one of the Urbana topics of discernment, justice, business as mission, globalization and Bible storying [2,500 words] (25%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome 1-3]. [20 hours].

PREREQUISITES: It is strongly recommended that you attend the Urbana Conference in St. Louis – December 27, 2018 to January 1, 2019 or that you have attended a previous Urbana Conference as it will be important context for the course.
