MT542: HOLISTIC THEOLOGY FOR THE CITY (4 Units: 160 hours). Nathan D. Hieb, Ph.D.

DESCRIPTION: Urban life and ministry require theological agility in order to respond wisely to the pressing challenges facing local communities.Employing a constructive and integrative method, students will interweave Scripture, insights from historical and current contextual theologies, their own life journeys, and the diverse influences shaping their cities, in order to construct their own contextual urban theologies.Doing so will enable them to see more clearly the close interrelationship between theological reflection and transformative practice.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students who complete MT542 will demonstrate abilities: 1) to address the theological questions raised by their ministry contexts through a constructive and integrative approach that draws upon Scripture, Christian theology, their life experience, and contextual influences, 2) to articulate the interrelationship between classical Christian doctrines and current contextual theologies of sociopolitical transformation, and 3) to identify how diverse cultural perspectives may broaden and deepen their theological engagement within their particular contexts.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignment and assessment section. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.
