ML523: MENTORING (4 Units: 160 Hours). Frank D. Hankins.


DESCRIPTION: This course is an in-depth study of mentoring as a life-shaping relationship between mentor, mentoree, and the Holy Spirit. Without circumventing the acquisition of skills, this course focuses on how mentoring affords an environment and relationship for shaping character and encouraging spiritual formation and soul care. The course underscores that no one ideal mentor exists, but that multiple mentors are needed. The dynamics for growing mentoring relationships will be explored. Focus will be given to the need for mentoring balance with mentors, peer mentors, and mentorees (mentoring 360). Context will be in view including cross-cultural and cross-generational mentoring. The student will consider current mentoring models and strategies for the emerging generation. Course design seeks to foster both personal applications and applications in the student’s current context and ministry.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of this course, students will have: (1) described various types of mentoring and their dynamics; (2) understood the way mentoringaffectsspiritual growth and character development; (3) learned strategies to implement culturally relevant mentoring in their ministry contexts; (4) written a personal mentoring case study applicable to their current and future leadership practice.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignment and assessment section. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.

REQUIRED READING: The total number of pages of reading comes to be 1,150 to 1,300 pages, depending on choices in Group B and C. Books are available in Kindle and one in pdf on course. Students who have read any of the following texts for other courses should replace that text with another from recommended readings.
