MD557: CHILDREN, REFUGEES, & ARMED CONFLICT (4 Units: 161 hours).  David H. Scott.

DESCRIPTION:There are more refugees today than at any other time in the history of the world, and the majority are children and teens. Without special attention, the unique needs and capacities of these children and youth end up being tragically overlooked in even well-meaning responses. This class offers a missiologically-informed overview and analysis of the links between conflict zones and the effects and opportunities it provides children, as well as the range of responses that can and should be provided to children and/or their families as they seek safety. Special emphasis is placed on the experiences of and responses to children within conflict zones, in refugee camps, and during the resettlement process.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Critically assess a range of crises that children and youth face globally because of armed conflict
  2. Use theory and theology to analyze different responses with an aim to maximizing missionary efforts towards children affected by armed conflict
  3. Synthesize and evaluate new initiatives for responding to “children on the move” and other children both in, and emanating from, conflict zones.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignment and assessment section.
