ST588: THEOLOGY OF AFRICA, ASIA, AND LATIN AMERICA. (4 units: 162 Hours). Amy L. Chilton Thompson.

DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to introduce students to Christian theology developing outside the contexts of Europe and North America. The focus will be on the breadth of Protestant, Indigenous, and Roman Catholic theological voices in three major areas of the world: Asia, Latin America, and Africa. In addition to a survey of Christian theology, this course will emphasize women’s theologies, liberation theologies, and “contextual” christologies from these areas.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: By completing this course, the student will: (1) demonstrate a working knowledge of selected African, Asian, and Latin American theological themes, theologians, and ecclesial practices; (2) develop skills in reading and dialoguing across contexts, hearing theologians and believers from other contexts in their own voices and critically evaluating that work on its own terms; and (3) demonstrate skills in constructively engaging global theology from the student’s own context.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignment and assessment section. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.
