MM566: Self Care and Spiritual Formation for Missionaries and NGO Cross-Cultural Workers (4 Units: 160 hours). Rebecca Giselbrecht.

DESCRIPTION: Missionaries and NGO cross-cultural staff accept living in challenging settings. How can they persevere, overcome, and thrive? This course examines the theological foundations of a missionary lifestyle and the role spiritual formation plays in maintaining well-being. The missionary life involves above-average levels of stress, loss, and possibly trauma. Students will learn the effects of these and how to respond in ways that promote well-being. Strategies and skills for building community and addressing personal and group conflicts will be examined. The course will also enable students to create and maintain a self-care plan as a tool to embrace ministry with resilience.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 1) identify the theological foundations for their missionary vocation and the importance of self care; (2) recognize the effects of stress, trauma and loss and respond in ways that lead to well-being; (3) apply strategies for conflict resolution and peace-making, in ways that strengthen relationships; and (4) develop a self-care plan (rule of life) suited to their situation and personality, which includes spiritual formation.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignment and assessment section. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.
