ML535: INTERCULTURAL LEADERSHIP IN EAST ASIAN CONTEXTS (4 Units: 160 hours). Peter Lim

DESCRIPTION: This course explores the nuances of leadership in the intercultural contexts.  We will cover the theories behind intercultural leadership, identify components of culture, introduce the basic principles in intercultural communication, and develop understanding of intercultural synergies in organizational behavior within multicultural setting.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Student will (1) relate dimensions of culture and leadership dimensions to intercultural leadership and appraise impacts and implications of the Confucian Asia Area; (2) investigate and evaluate leadership models, frameworks, and theories in relation to intercultural settings; (3) explain and employ the different categories of culture to a variety of ministry backdrops; and (4) explore and apply approaches to intercultural communication.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignment and assessment section. This is a collaborative research course. It is collaborative because students are expected to provide some of the content. Students are required to interact with the materials, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online instructions, reading, journaling, web-based research and other assignments that promote active learning.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

1. 1,200 pages of required reading (10%) [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1, 2, & 3]. (70 hours).

2. Weekly DLAs: Practical application of theory with interaction through videos, posts, and reflective activities [often 250-word forum post and follow-up 250-word response] (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #2, 3 & 4]. (30 hours).

3. Readings Analysis Assignments: Two 500-word critical analysis on selected chapters in Carroll et al (15%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1 & 2]. (10 hours).

4. One 1,000-word paper on the conceptual framework and literature review for the final paper (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #3 & 4]. (10 hours).

5. Final Paper: Using leadership theories, intercultural communication, the cultural and leadership dimensions, and intercultural intelligence to develop a six-month leadership plan to form an intercultural team whose members are selected from the cultures studied [4,000 words] (35%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #3 & 4]. (40 hours).
