MD532:  UNDERSTANDING AND ENGAGING CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND ASSET BASED COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (4 Units: 160 hours). Mary Glenn.


DESCRIPTION: This course will explore and engage the theological, contextual and missional implications and engage in the application of CCD (Christian Community Development) principles based on the work of John Perkins and the ABCD (asset based community development) methodology developed by John McKnight and John Kretzman for the sustainable development and transformation of communities based on their resources, strengths, assets and potential rather their needs and deficits.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated (1) an understanding, integration and application of the key components of Christian Community Development and ABCD approaches for community engagement and transformation in their community context; (2) a critical assessment of the needs vs. gifts approach and an understanding and utilization of tools for asset mapping their community; and (3) an understanding of the theologies of identity, community development, ministry of presence/spirituality, place and reconciliation.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignments and assessment section. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, research and other assignments that promote active learning. Attendance of the national CCDA conference is a pre-requisite to enrolling in course.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

1. 1,250 pages of reading and one integrative book report (500-750 words). (20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2, 3]. [75 hours].

2. Develop personal ministry of presence and/or spirituality of place reflection paper (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2, 3]. [10 hours].

3. Weekly posts (200-350 words) and responses to classmates post (150-200 words). (20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2, 3]. [30 hours].

4. Fieldwork and asset mapping a neighborhood/community/zip code and write up/map of data collected (400 words). (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2, 3]. [10 hours].

5. One major project paper (signature assignment) applying and integrating the theories, theologies and skills of ABCD and CCDA learned in class to a specific cultural community context. This project paper should include the national conference experience (3500 words). (40%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2, 3]. [35 hours].

PREREQUISITES: Attendance of CCDA annual national conference (August 31-September 3, 2016) or previous CCDA conference in last 3 years. Written permission of the instructor is required to enroll in this class.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Option to meet the C2 requirement in the 120 MDiv and 80 MATM Programs (Fall 2015). Option to meet requirement in International Development and Urban Studies emphasis.

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
