OT567: SALMOS [PSALMS] (SPANISH TEXT) (4 Units: 160 hours). Thomas H. McAlpine.


DESCRIPTION: Of the Psalter Martin Luther writes “In it is comprehended most beautifully and briefly everything that is in the entire Bible.” Historically a core resource for formation and worship, we will explore individual psalms and the Psalter as a collection.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability (1) to recognize typical genres, literary and/or rhetorical strategies, and identify the implications for interpretation, (2) to articulate an informed understanding of a psalm within its likely original context, within the Psalter, and within the Christian canon, (3) to critically use appropriate scholarly resources, (4) to identify central issues in the critical study of the Psalter, (5) to reflect on the contribution of the Psalter to Christian faith and practice.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignment and assessment section. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.

  2. 600 pages of required reading. Assessed through weekly Forum participation, Quiz/Report, and Exegetical Paper. [Assignment relates to learning outcomes ##1-5]. [40 hours].

  3. 20 hours of audio lectures. Assessed through weekly Forum participation, Quiz/Report, and Exegetical Paper. [Assignment relates to learning outcomes ##1-5]. [20 hours].

  4. 20 hours of study of specific psalms keyed to lectures. A typical lecture covers a number of psalms; the lecture is paused to allow study of particular elements in the psalm using scholarly tools (concordance, bible dictionaries, commentaries, and other library resources). Assessed through weekly Forum participation, Quiz/Report, and Exegetical Paper. [Assignment relates to learning outcome #1-3, 5]. [20 hours].

  5. 1 page weekly Forum posts, drawing on required reading, lectures, scholarly tools. Assessed for demonstrated competence in interpretation (10%). [Assignment relates to learning outcome ##1-3, 5] [10 hours]

  8. Report on interview with leader in Asian/African/African-American church or rabbi of synagogue re role of Psalter in their tradition. Assessed for detail, insight, cogency (10%). [Assignment relates to learning outcome #5]. [5 hours]

  9. Integration paper (“The Psalter and worship within my tradition”) (5 pages), drawing on required reading, lectures, forum interaction, interview. Assessed for detail, insight, cogency (10%). [Assignment relates to learning outcome #5]. [10 hours].

  10. Weekly Quiz/Report. The quiz assesses comprehension of reading and lecture material; the report is self-reporting of completion of daily psalm reading and other reading requirements (10%). [Assignment relates to learning outcome #1, 2, 4]. (10% of grade)

PREREQUISITES: Spanish.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Counts as a biblical elective for the 120 MDiv, 80 MAT, and 80 MATM Programs (Fall 2015). Counts as a biblical elective for the MATM and MAICS Programs (Winter 2010). Meets the OTBK requirement for the MAT Program (Winter 2010).
