OT567: PSALMS (English) (4 Units: 160 hours). E. R. Hayes


DESCRIPTION: This class is a study of the content and literary qualities of the book of Psalms in light of its historical background and developing theology. Consideration will be given to understanding the biblical text on its own terms and to reading and interpreting it for contemporary audiences. Additionally, attention will be given to critical tools, methodology, language, genre, the effect of culture, the person of the interpreter and the movement from interpretation to proclamation.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students successfully completing the course will have demonstrated that they: (1) have a knowledge and understanding of the book of Psalms, its literary features, its historical and cultural context, and the way it illustrates works of its genre; (2) can offer an exegesis of passages from the book of Psalms in light of a range of appropriate interpretive approaches, including ones that take account of the diversity of contexts from which the text can be read; (3) have articulated some reflection on the significance of the book of Psalms for their discipleship and ministry.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignment and assessment section. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.

  5. Four short essays on questions from the assigned readings and learning activities. [500 words] (20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1]. [20 hours].

  6. Interpretive assignment: A ten-fifteen page research essay on interpretation of a selected Psalm. [2,500-3,500 words] (40%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #2 and 3]. [30 hours].
