WS523: ANGLICAN LITURGY AND WORSHIP (4 units: 160 hours). James Steven.


DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to enable Anglicans and non-Anglicans alike to reflect upon and engage creatively with the nature and practice of Anglican liturgy. The approach will assume that one of the most fruitful ways of studying and understanding Christian worship is to explore the liturgical practices of a specific denomination. Topics to be covered include (1) principles of Anglican worship; (2) key historical texts such as the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England; the 1979 Book of Common Prayer of The Episcopal Church of the USA and the 2003 Book of Occasional Services; (3) factors influencing liturgical revision; (4) the impact and significance of the contemporary debate on Open Communion.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of this course students will have: (1) demonstrated an understanding of the principles of Anglican worship; (2) acquired knowledge of selected key texts of Anglican liturgy; (3) critically and contextually reflected on the significance of Anglican worship in relation to the wider church and their own liturgical/worship experience.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignment and assessment section. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.
