NE567: Luke (English Text) (4 Units: 160 hours). Timothy W. Reardon.


DESCRIPTION: This course is an English text, exegetical study of Luke’s Gospel, investigating major theological themes, the narrative development of Luke as a whole, and interpreting individual passages with reference to their literary, historical, and socio-cultural contexts.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated (1) knowledge of the structure, content, and main themes of the Gospel of Luke; (2) an understanding of the cultural and historical milieu of the text; (3) an ability to interpret Luke critically through literary, socio-cultural, historical, and other methodologies; (4) interaction with multiple interpretive perspectives; (5) an ability to reflect theologically on major themes within Luke, such as salvation, wealth, discipleship, etc., assessing how the text confronts faithful readers and the church.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignment and assessment section. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.

REQUIRED READING: Approx. 1,043 pages of reading required.

Either the CEB, NRSV, or TNIV translation of the New Testament.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Weekly Course Lectures: video/audio, Prezi presentations, and Moodle’s on-line lesson function [20 hours].

  2. Prompted Discussion Forums: Active participation in course forums responding to lectures and readings, 250-words weekly (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1, 2, 4, and 5] [10 hours].

  3. Discussion Forum Responses: Active engagement with classmates through 250-word weekly forum responses (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1, 2, 4, and 5] [10 hours].

  4. Lecture Discussion Forum: Regular participation in the lecture discussion, response, and reflection forum, offering one’s own reflection and responding to others, which will average to about 125 words/week (5%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1, 2, 4, and 5] [5 hours].

  5. Reading: Approx. 1,043 pages of required reading. [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1–5] [70 hours].

  6. One Exegetical Working Paper: Each student is responsible for a close reading of one selected pericope, providing a 1,000-1,250 word assessment of major textual elements, issues, and questions (25%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #3] [10 hours].

  7. One Final Research Paper: a 2,500–3,000 word exegesis paper (35%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #3] [30 hours].

  8. A Reflection on Lukan Salvation: Each student will develop a 1,250 word reflection paper on Lukan soteriology, its presentation in the text, related conceptions, and contemporary significance for the church. This should not require research outside of class material (15%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, #4 and #5] [5 hours].

PREREQUISITES: None.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Counts as a biblical elective for the 120 MDiv Program and the MATM and MAICS Programs (Winter 2010), and the NTBK requirement for the MAT Program (Winter 2010).
