EV519: EVANGELISMO ENTRE HISPANOS [Evangelism among Hispanics] (4 Units: 120 hours). Osías Segura-Guzman.
DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to equip church leaders to develop effective evangelistic strategies for their church’s distinctive ministry context. The course focuses on evangelism as a process of building relationships through which the local church seeks to impact its context with a holistic gospel. Therefore, the class will provide a theological basis for evangelism and for the communication of the gospel in contemporary Hispanic culture. It will provide students with tools to develop evangelistic strategies in order to plan personal, small group, and church-wide evangelism activities appropriate to their own context.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: After completing this course the student will (1) have gained a biblical, theological, and missiological understanding of evangelism in contemporary society; (2) have practiced engaging in peer-discussion based on weekly readings that leads to the mutual construction of knowledge related to evangelization; (3) appreciate the importance of a “culture of evangelism” in the local church; (4) have tools for evaluating contemporary evangelistic programs; (5) be motivated to engage in evangelism and be able to analyze and apply the most suitable evangelistic tactics for effective church outreach; (6) have developed for implementation a plan of evangelism that is culturally relevant to the student’s church or ministry situation.
COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:
Students are required to read 100-150 pages weekly to engage in forum discussions. [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-2] [75 hours].
Weekly forum posts and replies (250 words) as described in the syllabus (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-5] [15 hours].
A 1000-word field research report, analyzing a local congregation’s theology and practice of evangelism, based on three hours of participant observation and interviews (20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 3-6] [8 hours: 4 hours field research, and 4 hours written report].
Two 1000-1500-word book reviews on Van Engen's and Claiborne books (20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1, 3, 4] [20 hours].
A 2000-word integrative and reflective paper that includes the student’s theology of evangelism and presents a plan for a culturally relevant evangelistic project in the student’s local congregation or ministry situation (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-6] [15 hours].
PREREQUISITES: Spanish.
