NE506: NEW TESTAMENT EXEGESIS: GOSPEL OF MARK (Greek Text) (4 Units). Adam Winn.
DESCRIPTION: This course is an exegetical study of the Gospel of Mark, which includes interpretation of selected passages of the Greek text with lecture and discussion of the Gospel’s basic themes, theological content, and first century context.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will have demonstrated the ability (1) to employ a range of exegetical approaches relevant to the interpretation of the Gospel of Mark; (2) to understand the Gospel of Mark within its numerous contexts (social, historical, political, literary, canonical, etc); (3) to identify central issues in the critical study of the Gospel of Mark; (4) to articulate primary theological and ethical concerns of the Gospel of Mark; and (5) to demonstrate the ability to use lexical and grammatical aids for the purpose of translation and exegetical analysis, identify and translate grammatical constructions, engage in syntactical analyses, and perform rudimentary exercises in text criticism in the Gospel of Mark.
COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:
Participation in course “content forum” [2-3 hours per week x 10 weeks]—addresses learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, and 4. (10%).
Participation in “interpretive exercise” forums [5-6 hours x 2 weeks]—addresses learning outcome 5 (10%).
Participation in “translation” forums [1 hour per week x 5 weeks]—addresses learning outcome 5 (5%)
Listening to/Reading course lecture notes [1 hour per week x 10 weeks]—addresses learning outcomes 1, 2, and 3.
Weekly reading assignments [3-4 hours reading per week x 10 weeks]—addresses learning outcome 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Preparation of weekly translation assignments accompanied by grammatical insights [3-4 hours per week x 5 weeks]—addresses learning outcome 5 (10%).
Critical review in which students will compare two essays from Mark and Method [10 hours preparing and writing]—addressing student learning outcome 1(25%).
3500 word exegetical paper on a pericope in the Gospel of Mark [20 hours preparing and writing] —addresses learning outcomes 2, 3, and 4 (40%).
PREREQUISITES: NE502 and NS500 or NT500.
RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets MDiv core requirement in New Testament Exegesis (NTE) and MA program requirements for New Testament book study (NTBK).
FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
