ML523: MENTORING. Frank D. Hankins.
DESCRIPTION: This course is an in-depth study of mentoring as a life-shaping relationship between mentor, mentoree, and the Holy Spirit. Without circumventing the acquisition of skills, this course focuses on how mentoring affords an environment and relationship for shaping character and encouraging spiritual formation and soul care. The course underscores that no one ideal mentor exists, but that multiple mentors are needed. The dynamics for growing mentoring relationships will be explored. Focus will be given to the need for mentoring balance with mentors, peer mentors, and mentorees (mentoring 360). Context will be in view including cross-cultural and cross-generational mentoring. The student will consider current mentoring models and strategies for the emerging generation. Course design seeks to foster both personal applications and applications in the student’s current context and ministry.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of this course, students will have (1) described various types of mentoring and their dynamics; (2) understood the way mentoring affects spiritual growth and character development; (3) learned strategies to implement culturally relevant mentoring in their ministry contexts; (4) written a personal mentoring case study applicable to their current and future leadership practice.
COURSE FORMAT: The class will be conducted online using a 10-week lesson program aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar. Weekly classes include group interaction (threaded discussions), group projects, book reviews, reflective assignments, and group conference calls with effective mentoring practitioners and/or authors of course texts.
