NE506: NEW TESTAMENT EXEGESIS: GOSPEL OF MARK. Adam Winn.
DESCRIPTION: This course is an exegetical study of the Gospel of Mark, which includes interpretation of selected passages of the Greek text with lecture and discussion of the Gospel’s basic themes, theological content, and first century context.
SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: This course will strengthen skills that are essential for responsible interpretation of Christian scriptures, interpretation that should be central to preaching, teaching, discipleship, and Christian living. More specifically, this course will increase knowledge of and appreciation for the Gospel of Mark, both of which will shape one’s preaching and teaching on a text that is central to the church’s portrait of Jesus.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will have demonstrated the ability (1) to employ a range of exegetical approaches relevant to the interpretation of the Gospel of Mark; (2) to understand the Gospel of Mark within its numerous contexts (social, historical, political, literary, canonical, etc); (3) to identify central issues in the critical study of the Gospel of Mark; (4) to articulate primary theological and ethical concerns of the Gospel of Mark; and (5) to demonstrate the ability to use lexical and grammatical aids for the purpose of translation and exegetical analysis, identify and translate grammatical constructions, engage in syntactical analyses, and perform rudimentary exercises in text criticism in the Gospel of Mark.
COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:
Participation in course “content forum” (10%)
Participation in “interpretive exercise forum” (15%)
Preparation of weekly translation assignments accompanied by grammatical insights (10%)
Critical review in which students will compare two essays from Mark and Method (25%)
Exegetical paper on a pericope in the Gospel of Mark (ca. 10 pages) (40%).
PREREQUISITES: NE502 Exegetical Method and NS500 New Testament 1.
