MD554: MINISTERING TO CHILDREN AFFECTED BY HIV & AIDS (4 units). Dick Stellway.


DESCRIPTION: This course surveys the multifaceted impact of HIV and AIDS on children living in AIDS-infected areas, the nature of conventional responses, and challenges that must be addressed. It examines emerging concepts and standards of "good practice" with respect to care, treatment, and prevention, and ways to identify develop and implement them. Attention is given to strategies for sustaining, improving, and expanding a positive response, including mobilizing churches, partnering with school and communities, equipping caregivers, and empowering the children themselves.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will demonstrate (1) an awareness of the problems confronting children affected by HIV & AIDS, their families and communities, and the challenges confronting those seeking to address them; (2) a familiarity with a range of "good practice" principles and standards pertaining to care, treatment, and prevention, as well as means for implementing them; and (3) a knowledge of a variety of means for developing, sustaining, improving, and expanding a constructive response.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller's academic calendar. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, forums, reading and reflection, the required assignments, and practical application.

ASSIGNMENTS:
  1. Journaling: on assigned readings, submitted bi-weekly (20%).

  2. Substantive contributions to ongoing discussion forums (20%).

  3. Critical review of Resistance Fighter by Susie Howe: using theoretical and theological sources in your critique (20%).

  4. Two group presentations: over unit topics to be presented at different points in quarter (20%).

  5. Final Paper: An 1800-2500 word strategic plan of action to sustain and/or improve the welfare of children affected by HIV and AIDS. Must include supportive documentation (20%).

PREREQUISITES: None.
