FT530B: CLINICAL FOUNDATIONS II: BASIC SKILLS. Migum Gweon

 

 

DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to build on the concepts and skills of Clinical Foundations I for MSMFT students. The focus of this course will continue to be professional identity formation, the integration of faith and therapeutic practice, case conceptualization, building on basic microskills, and practicum orientation. Students will begin integrating theory to practice and case conceptualization. In addition, students will learn about special therapeutic issues, such as working with children, teens, working with severely depressed and suicidal clients, making use of supervision, and self-care.

 

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1.       Students will continue to build a foundational knowledge for therapeutic practice.

2.       Students will continue to build the basic clinical skills necessary for a therapeutic setting.

3.       Students will continue to explore the integration of their faith and professional identities.

4.       Student will continue to build an awareness and knowledge pertaining to personal capacity as a beginning therapist.

5.       Students will increase their understanding of applying theory to case conceptualization and therapeutic practice.

6.       Students will receive six hours of BBS Suicide Prevention Training (AB 1436) which is mandatory for licensure.

 

RELATIONSHIP TO SCHOOL AND SEMINARY LEARNING OUTCOMES:

This course will continue to prepare students to provide preventative and/or transformational mental health services, apply the insights of Christian theology along with the techniques of the social and behavioral sciences, and identify critical issues of diversity and make appropriate responses, and prepare them to pursue a career in marriage and family therapy.

 

COURSE FORMAT:

This 2 unit course meets 4 hours weekly for 10 consecutive weeks. Students will meet once a week for a 2 hour in-class seminar with lecture, discussion, and role plays, and once a week for a 2 hour lab to practice clinical skills learned in class with a teaching assistant (TA).

ASSIGNMENTS and GRADING:

Scheduled readings are to be completed before class and lab.

 

This is a graded course. The final grade will be based on:

1.       In-class clinical skills evaluation

2.       Reflection paper

3.       Final video assignment

4.       Class participation and attendance.

Note: Advancement to practicum is only partially based on the grade for this course. Obtaining a passing grade for the course does not ensure advancement to practicum.

 

PREREQUISITES:

1.       Enrollment in MS MFT program

2.       FT530A Clinical Foundations I or equivalent
