PM537: MIGRATION, TRANSNATIONALISM, IDENTITY, AND MISSION (4 Units: 160 hours). Alexia Salvatierra.

DESCRIPTION: This online course introducesmigrationtheory and transnationalism as tools for understanding ministry and mission among migrant communities. The course will place migration within a global context and will help students use Practical Theology (PT) and missiology to address specific ministry contexts.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: The course seeks the following goals for each student: (1) ability to articulate migration theory and how to integrate it with ecclesiology, missiology, leadership, and practical theology for ministry and mission among migrants; (2) critically reflect on migration in a transnational globalized context, using social science research, for transformational discipleship, mission and ministry; (3)understand some of the specific challenges of the migrant experience in conversation with Christian theology; and (4) develop interpretive and intercultural relational skills for ministry and mission among migrants.

RELATIONSHIP TO PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: This course will teach students concepts and skills for understanding migration and transmigration as it relates to Christianity, which is consistent with the MDiv PLO that states"Students will have demonstrated capacities to engage diverse cultural contexts for transformational discipleship, mission, and ministry," the MATM PLO that states "Students will have demonstrated capacities for historically informed theological and ethical reflection." It may also contribute to the MAT PLO that states "Students will have demonstrated academic capacities appropriate to an area of focus in a theological discipline or to interdisciplinary theological study," and the MAICS PLO that states "Students will have demonstrated capacities to pursue vocations that engage the mission of God globally."

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning. Students will need to commit 160 hours to successfully complete the course.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENTS:

  1. Interact with weekly course material presented online within the assigned time period. The Professor will complete a video on the theme of the week to come by Monday at midnight and a written response to a synthesis of the students’ posts and questions from the previous week by Sunday at midnight. Students may also receive individual responses on their posts with their weekly grade. Students will respond to weekly prompts for discussion posts and responses based on readings and course material - 250 words per initial post, 2 responses per week. Students will complete the initial post by Wednesday at midnight and will post comments by Saturday at midnight of each week. 36%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2, 3, 4]. [42 hours].
  2. 1012 pp. of required reading plus 7 hours of videos. Students demonstrate that they have read/viewed the materials through direct quotes and indirect references to the material in their posts and comments. There will not be a separate grade for this assignment but it will rather be reflected in the grades given for written work. [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2, 3, 4]. [64 hours].
  3. Write three 750-word essays based on the readings and course material (30%). [Each essay will be linked to one of the learning outcomes, #1, 2 or 3]. [24 hours].
  4. Signature assignment: Final Research Paper using a Case Study After studying a migrant and/or refugee ministry in your local area, you will write a 2,500 word paper. The paper will include a report on the ministry (detailed description of the ministry based on an interview with a staff or lead volunteer for the ministry, an activity or visit to the ministry offices and a review of their online presence), as well as an analysis of the ministry in the light of the course materials. In your analysis, describe the spiritual and practical impact of the ministry both on the lives of migrants/refugees, on those who come into direct contact with it, and on the broader society. Give recommendations for how the ministry might be able to increase its impact. Your analysis should reflect how the information and concepts in the course materials have contributed to your understanding of the actual and potential impact of this ministry. I will look for how you integrate the data from your research of the ministry and your insights from this experience with the material in the course lectures and texts. For this case study, I will accept a parachurch organization, Christian or interfaith network, faith-based social services and/or advocacy organization or local church which ministers to immigrants/refugees. If you have trouble identifying these in your area, please contact me; I am familiar with the field and may be able to help. If you cannot identify any of these in your local area, I will accept a secular organization. If you are studying a secular organization, identify the ways in which it currently relates to the Church and how it could increase its relationship with the Church. This assignment has three steps - by 10/5, post the name and a brief description of the ministry (not graded), by 11/9, post a brief progress report (4%) and by 12/7, submit your final paper (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2, 3, 4]. [30 hours].
