PM506: ASIAN AMERICAN PASTORAL MINISTRY (4 Units: 165 hours). Kevin Doi.

DESCRIPTION: This is a practical theology course that engages theological, conceptual, and practical matters in ecclesiology and pastoral ministry in Asian American contexts. The work of pastoral leadership is explored with regard to the personal, relational, cultural, and corporate dimensions of pastoral ministry. There is an ecclesiological emphasis on nurturing environments in which all participants are formed as the body of Christ into an interpretive and witnessing community engaged with God in spiritual, congregational, and missional formation. Working from a praxis perspective, the course will attend to topics and paradigms that provide pastoral leaders ways to think theologically on the ground about pressing issues in their respective Asian American congregations, organizations, and contexts.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to (1) describe the interrelationship between leader and congregation by identifying their social location and providing an ethnographic profile and analysis of their congregation or organization; (2) establish a sustainable spirituality as Asian American leaders, with special consideration to sabbath, self-care, and creative capacity; (3) articulate a theology and philosophy of pastoral ministry with regard to discipleship, congregational formation, family systems, and missional engagement, demonstrating attention to Asian American themes and considerations; (4) explain and propose approaches to facilitating organizational transformation within Asian American contexts; (5) students will have completed an approved online course in mandated reporting.

RELATIONSHIP TO PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: PM courses fulfill the PLO that states, “Students will have demonstrated capacities for being theologically reflective practitioners for Christian ministries”.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignment and assessment section. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

1. 1,100 pp. of required reading (5% of final grade). Required reading is to be completed by Wednesday of each week prior to posting discussions. Reading log will be turned in at the end of the quarter. This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-4. [55 hours].
2. Instructional content (5% of final grade). Includes video lectures with slide presentations,other selected videos, and podcasts. Lectures are to be viewed by Wednesday of each week prior to posting discussions. Log will be turned in at end of the quarter. This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-4. [20 hours].
3. 250-word weekly forum posts and two 100-word weekly replies (20% of final grade). Posts should demonstrate (1) critical engagement with the week’s lectures and reading, and (2) personal integration and reflection. This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-4. [20 hours].
4. Completion of two (2), 5-page (1,250 words) case studies, including endnotes (30% of final grade). Each case study will be graded on the precision and coherence in dealing with the topic, evidence of engagement with class lectures and readings, and depth of theological insight and pastoral care. This assignment is related to learning outcome #3. [30 hours].
5. A 12-15 page (3,500 words) final contextual paper (40% of final grade). The paper should identify a narrow topic related to an Asian American pastoral leadership issue from the student’s current or previous context. The paper should include (1) analysis of relevant social location and ethnographic information of subjects/congregation/organization, (2) a clear statement of the leadership issue, including a description of pertinent dynamics and challenges that must be addressed, (3) an assessment of the traditions related to pastoral leadership and/or theology present among subjects/congregation/organization, (4) application of new learning based on class lectures, discussions, and readings, and (5) an imaginative pastoral leadership proposal that invites transformative change in the church’s capacity to live into God’s future. [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1-4]. [35 hours].
6. Complete the online training course for mandated reporting. [This assignment is related to outcome #5]. [5 hours].

PREREQUISITES: It is recommended that students take PM544 during or after Field Ed, or toward the end of a master’s program. It is also highly recommended that students have completed IS500. TM528 is recommended by the Asian American Center.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Option to meet the PM requirement in the MDiv Program (2017). Option to meet the PC requirement in the 120 MDiv Program (Fall 2015).
