COURSE DESCRIPTION

The goal of this course is to facilitate self-understanding, understanding of others, and skills for culturally syntonic clinical work.  While our focus is limited to a few selected people groups and topics, it is expected that the culture-general principles that emerge will be helpful in working with people from diverse backgrounds.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The objectives are:

1.     To facilitate your self-understanding in relationship to individuals from varying cultural backgrounds (APA Individual and Cultural Diversity (ICD) Competency 3.1)

2.     To provide an opportunity for empathizing with the life experiences of those who have been marginalized by Western society (APA ICD Competency 3.2 & 3.3), and

3.     To increase cultural competency skills by enhancing culturally competent interviewing techniques, facilitating appropriate management of cultural or value conflicts within the psychotherapy session, sharpening skills in developing cultural formulations, and encouraging thoughtful reflection on how to broaden our culture bound perspectives on clinical psychology (APA ICD Competency 3.4).

RELATIONSHIP TO SEMINARY AND SCHOOL OBJECTIVES:
