GM554: LEADERSHIP AND DIVERSITY (4 units, 160 hours). Susan L. Maros.

DESCRIPTION: This course considers different dimensions involved in intercultural leadership in a North American context, focusing on gender and racial-ethnic-cultural concerns. The aim of the course is to facilitate self-understanding and foster cultural competencies for Christian leadership in a variety of settings.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have

  1. Demonstrated self-understanding in relationship to individuals from a variety of social-cultural backgrounds.
  2. Engaged Scripture, theology, social science content, and other resources to reflect on the diversity of God’s image as seen through the lenses of gender, racial-ethnic-cultural identity, and intercultural leadership.
  3. Assessed current leadership cultural competencies and identified areas for development.
  4. Described implications of learning for ministry engagement with their own context.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar with 40 instructional hours, including optional synchronous video sessions, and a course total of 160 hours.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  3. Online interaction, including (but not limited to) weekly asynchronous online discussions, collaborative content creation, and instructor-facilitated synchronous video conference sessions (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1 and 2] [30 hours].
  4. Cultural Identity and Salience Reflection Paper: Write a brief (750-1,000 word) description of your own cultural identity. Then discuss the areas within your cultural identity that have particular salience for you at this time. (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1]. [5 hours].
  5. Implicit Bias and Privilege Reflection Paper: Write a brief (750-1,000 word) reflection regarding your perspective on privilege, explicit and implicit bias. Reflect on what you might plan to do to decrease your own bias. (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1 and #3]. [5 hours].
  6. Ministry Observation: Select a racial-ethnic-cultural group that is not your own. Interview a person engaged in ministry with and among that group. Develop a series of questions, based on your readings and class experience for the interview. The report (1,000-1,200 words) should include a description of the group and the specific issues faced by the person in ministering within that group (including, but not limited to, gender and racial-ethnic-cultural concerns). Provide a brief presentation, possibly in collaboration with other students who researched the same group (20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2, and 3] [20 hours].
  7. Critical Reflection Paper: Write a paper (2,000-2,500 words) assessing personal and ministry intercultural competencies rooted in course resources, identifying areas of future development personally and in relating to student’s context. This paper will have cultural, theological, and ministry components. This paper constitutes the signature assignment for this course. (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2, 3, 4]. [25 hours].

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets requirement in Ministry Foundations (MINF) and Ethnicity (ETHN). Option to meet the C5 requirement in the 120 MDiv Program.
