FT530A: CLINICAL FOUNDATIONS I: BASIC SKILLS. Migum Gweon

 

 

DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to provide MFT Masters students with a foundation of clinical skills for therapeutic practice applicable across theoretical models and clinical contexts. Students will be given an overview of the standard course of therapy from intake to termination. The focus of this course will be professional identity formation, the integration of faith and therapeutic practice, building basic competency skills, and practicum preparation.

 

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1.       Students will gain a foundational knowledge for the therapy process, including intake and termination.

2.       Students will gain the basic clinical microskills applicable to any therapeutic setting.

3.       Students will gain awareness and knowledge pertaining to personal capacity as a beginning therapist.

4.       Students will learn about the intersectionality of personal, cultural, and professional development as they engage in self-of-the-therapist reflections and explore ways to process professional identity.

5.       Students will explore ways their faith shapes their professional identity as well as how their professional development informs their faith.

6.       Students will receive two practicum orientations in preparation for practicum.

 

RELATIONSHIP TO SCHOOL AND SEMINARY LEARNING OUTCOMES:

This course will:

1.       Prepare students to provide preventative and/or transformational mental health services.

2.       Apply the insights of Christian theology along with the techniques of the social and behavioral sciences.

3.       Identify critical issues of diversity and make appropriate responses.

4.       Prepare students to pursue a career in marital and family therapy.

 

COURSE FORMAT:

This 2 unit course meets 4 hours weekly for 10 consecutive weeks. Students will meet once a week for a 2 hour synchronous online seminar with lecture, discussion, and role plays, and once a week for a 2 hour synchronous online lab to practice clinical skills learned in class with a teaching assistant (TA).

 

Please note that classes and labs that fall on a holiday will be rescheduled.

ASSIGNMENTS:

Scheduled readings are to be completed before class and lab. Final grades will be based on: a) student attendance and participation in class, b) reflection papers, c) final video assignment of basic skills, and d) clinical skills evaluation.

 

Note: Advancement to practicum is only partially based on the grade for this course. Obtaining a passing grade for the course does not ensure advancement to practicum.

 

PREREQUISITES:

Enrollment in MS MFT program.
