FT520: CHILD AND ADOLESCENT THERAPY. Janelle Froehlich, LMFT and Georgie Wisen‐Vincent, LMFT, RPT‐S

 

 

DESCRIPTION:

This course provides an introduction to treating the major disorders of childhood and adolescence. We will examine treatment strategies for assessing and preventing psychological disorders in childhood and adolescence, focusing on fundamentals of play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and child-parent psychotherapy for children, as well as narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and systemic therapies for adolescents. Students will gain basic understanding of the possible reasons for disorders in children and adolescents as well as techniques to join with and treat children, adolescents and their families in therapy. Professional issues, including multicultural and legal issues when treating minors, will be addressed.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Child Therapy

1.       Students will have knowledge and skills in working with play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and child parent psychotherapy with children and families in clinical settings.

2.       Students will be able to demonstrate play therapy and cognitive behavioral techniques in class.

3.       Students will be able to apply child theology to clinical cases.

Adolescent Therapy

1.       Students will have knowledge and skills in working with narrative therapy with adolescents, cognitive-behavioral approaches and systemic involvement with the family in clinical settings.

2.       Students will be able to demonstrate both narrative therapy and cognitive behavioral techniques in class.

3.       Students will hone interviewing skills, increasing a knowledge base of adolescent culture and development by directly interacting with adolescents, youth workers, and other professionals collaborating with adolescents in both academic and religious settings.

Joint Outcomes

1.       Students will accurately identify the legal, ethical and multicultural issues in clinical cases with youth.

2.       Students will be able to facilitate positive youth development.

COURSE FORMAT:

The online 4 unit course will meet for four hours per week, via both asynchronous and synchronous interactions. The class format will include lectures, demonstrations, small group and individual presentations, as well as asynchronous and synchronous class discussions.

 

Child Therapy with professor Wisen‐Vincent will be covered during weeks 1 to 5 and Adolescent Therapy with professor Froehlich will be covered during weeks 6 to 10. Coursework and exams will be completed within each 5 week section.

ASSIGNMENTS:
