NE561: LUKE AND THE AMERICAN ROAD MOVIE (4 Units: 160 Hours). Michael C. McKeever.
DESCRIPTION: This course will pursue an online dialogue between the biblical journey motif in Luke and the American road movie, engaging such shared themes as pilgrimage, dislocation, race, gender, wealth, family, community, and reconciliation. The course will (1) study the chief passages and theological themes found in the extensive journey motif in the Gospel of Luke, (2) view and discuss selected American road movies, (3) facilitate a cultural and theological dialogue between the two, and (4) foster interpretive skills for biblical narrative and contemporary film.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will have demonstrated (1) a basic understanding of the Gospel of Luke; (2) the ability to recognize and explain Luke’s major theological motifs; (3) the ability to recognize and explain recurring American cultural distinctives in American road movies; (4) skill in the interpretation of a Gospel narrative, including close readings of specific passages; (5) skill in the interpretation of contemporary film, including close readings of specific scenes; and (6) the capacity to engage in a critical and theological dialogue between motifs in Luke’s Gospel and American road movies.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will be conducted online on a ten-week schedule aligned with Fuller’s academic calendar for a total of 40 instructional hours, which is outlined below in the assignment and assessment section. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.
