ML582 A & B: CHARACTER, COMMUNITY, AND LEADERSHIP. (A is 2 units, B is 2 units)

DESCRIPTION:

Students from around the globe will join faculty in dialogue around topics of character formation.  The challenge of developing character as a foundation for leadership will be applied in studentsÕ lives through reading, discussions, lectures, small group exercises, experimentation with electronic community building tools, community meals, tours of the campus, and silent reflection.  The work for this course sequence (4-units) spans 2 quarters.  Part A - pre-seminar work and in-class activities: students will meet in Pasadena for one week which serves primarily as an orientation to Fuller Seminary resources, the MAGL program and its learning components, and building deeper relationships with cohort members to achieve a more effective learning community; and Part B - post-seminar reading, writing, dialogue and final paper.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a result of this course sequence students will have:

á          Prepared for continuing studies at Fuller through an orientation to campus resources

á          Celebrated further development of the cohort learning community with fellow students

á          Analyzed at least one model of character formation

á          Examined several character formation issues of leaders

á          Explored global trends in Christian leadership

á          Revised MAGL Curriculum Sheet through conversations with advisors and peers

 

 

COURSE FORMAT:

ML582A will meet for the first week of a required two-week intensive residency for the MA in Global Leadership from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Students will do pre-seminar readings (read Clinton, Thrall, et al., and Willard before class) and assignments.  ML582B will involve post-seminar readings and reports, online connecting, and completion of final paper after they return home.

ASSIGNMENTS: subject to change as the course progresses

ML582A (graded pass/fail) (Spring 2009)

1.        Make a Òpersonal journeyÓ presentation to the class (40%)

2.        Fully participate in class discussions and learning exercises (40%)

3.        Two 500-word (two-page) reading reports on Willard and Thrall, pre-read Clinton (20%)

 

ML582B (letter graded) (Summer 2009)

1.        Revise and adjust personal MAGL Curriculum Sheet based on advising meetings (5%)

2.        Five 500-word (two-page) reading reports and associated assignments for remaining required texts (50%)

3.        A 3,750-word (15-page) paper integrating the themes of the course (45%)

 

PREREQUISITES:   This course sequence is only available to MA in Global Leadership students.

 

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: This two-quarter sequence, ML582A and B, is part of the required MAGL cohort series of courses. NO AUDITORS.

 

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
