OT504: WRITINGS. James C. VanderKam.


DESCRIPTION:

The third major division of the Hebrew Scriptures (Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, 1-2 Chronicles) will be divided into categories (where possible), surveyed, and examined within their ancient settings. Through exegesis of representative passages, the distinctive theological teachings of each composition will be highlighted.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
After completing the course students will have acquired:
  1. greater knowledge of the biblical books studied;

  2. greater understanding of the introductory issues relating to the books;

  3. exegetical skills appropriate to interpreting different kinds of texts and thus for deriving contemporary relevance from them.

COURSE FORMAT:
The class will meet five days a week for each of two weeks, with four hours of class per day.

REQUIRED READING:
Each biblical book to be covered (as much of this as possible should be done before class begins).

ASSIGNMENTS:
  1. A one-hour mid-term examination.

  2. A one-hour final examination.

None.
