DP515: ASSEMBLIES OF GOD POLITY. David Gable.


DESCRIPTION:

Assemblies of God History, Doctrine, and Polity is an introduction to the background, doctrinal priorities and operational styles of the Assemblies of God.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
  1. To help the Fuller student understand the background situation, experiences and biblical emphases in which the fellowship began, which in turn influence its self-understanding and procedures.

  2. To acquaint the student with Assemblies of God priorities ranging from the totally non-negotiable points to the matters of great personal choice.

  3. To make the student familiar with the procedures involved in beginning ministry in the Assemblies of God.

  4. To help the student assess his/her own gifting and potential role in the different kinds of A/G ministry.

COURSE FORMAT:
The class will meet Fridays 9:00 - 11:50 am, beginning on April 3, and ending on June 12, with no class meeting on Good Friday, April 10. The class meeting will consist of lecture/dialogue led by the professor and a number of guests who bring personal historical perspective or specific expertise.

ASSIGNMENTS:
Class attendance and participation (20% of grade). Report on assigned books, 3-5 pages (20%). A 15-20 page final paper demonstrating awareness of historical and current tensions and knowledge of pertinent Scriptures in regard to a particular point of doctrine (30%). A final test, combining objective and essay questions, or as an alternative to the final, 3 one-page papers on 3 assigned normative A/G behaviors (30%).

PREREQUISITES:
None.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM:
Meets M.Div. core requirement in Pastoral Ministry and Theology (MIN6).

FINAL EXAMINATION:
A final test, combining objective and essay questions, or as an alternative to the final, 3 one-page papers on 3 assigned normative A/G behaviors, based upon observations in an A/G church.
