FE503A/B/C: PART-TIME INTERNSHIP. Patterson.

DESCRIPTION:

This course is the elective three-quarter internship designed to give students supervised applied experience in a church, para-church, or institutional setting.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
This course is designed to meet the requirements which many denominations have for a candidate's ministry preparation, as well as providing a means for students to increase their skills and experience in a particular area of ministry.

COURSE FORMAT:
The course has three primary components: (1) The student spends ten (10) hours each week for three quarters (nine months) in the church, para-church, or institutional setting. The majority of this time is spent in a combination of specific ministry responsibility assignments. (2) One hour each week is to be spent with the on-site supervisor. These meetings are to be structured to contain (a) professional direction, evaluation, and overseeing of the student's ministry; (b) personal reflection and discussion of topics related to ministry as identified by the student and the supervisor; (c) support and prayer.

ASSIGNMENTS:
  1. Completion of a Learning Agreement by the supervisor and intern, to be turned in to the Field Education Office by the end of the second week of FE503A (the first quarter of the internship).

  2. Completion of Evaluation Reports by the student and the supervisor, to be turned in by the end of the tenth week of EACH quarter. The forms for those reports will be given to the student at the Preparatory Workshop for FE503A, at the first quarter interview for FE503B, and through campus mail for FE503C.

  3. Meeting at the end of the first quarter 503A with the Director of Field Education, or other faculty member as selected, for a progress report on the internship.

PREREQUISITES:
None. However, note that a setting for the internship experience and the selection of an approved supervisor (meaning that the supervisor has attended an Orientation or Certification session with the Field Education Office within the past 24 months or will attend a Supervisor Orientation) must be arranged prior to the internship period. Also, the student must participate in the Field Education Preparatory Workshop prior to actual involvement in the internship.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM:
The three quarter sequence, FE503A, B, and C meets the elective, non-core Field Education requirement for the M.Div. It is an elective for the M.A. The course is offered credit/no credit.

FINAL EXAMINATION:
None. Evaluation is through completion of the nine-month internship as specified in the individual learning agreement and through completion of all assignments listed above.
