PM517: AFRICAN AMERICAN CHURCH ADMINISTRATION & LEADERSHIP. Stanley B. Long.



DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to enhance the leadership and administration skills of those who are called to lead and administrate congregations. The goals are: (1) To define and explain the biblical basis and most effective steps towards the attainment of proficiency in the leadership and administration of a local Black congregation; (2) To evaluate oneself as a spiritual leader in order to determine personal capabilities, improve strategies, and bolster weaker areas; (3) To review the most effective means for the development of and integration with leadership within the local Black church; (4) To increase the level of understanding of how to prepare a congregation to accept and respond to management and leadership within the church; (5) To facilitate spiritual growth within a congregation through the application of church management principles; (6) To improve the mastery of one's time.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
Our ability to manage a church can critically affect the lives of our congregants. Good leadership and administration is crucial for the continued growth and development of the Kingdom of God. The goal of this course is to enhance our management, decision making, leadership skills, selection and development processes. In this way, it is hoped that optimum benefit can be gained from the church experience.

COURSE FORMAT:
This course will be taught as an intensive in two one-week blocks, during April 7-11 and May 19-23. During each of these two weeks meetings will be held daily Monday through Friday, from 7-9:50 each evening. It will utilize lectures, video presentations, small focus groups, and discussion as the primary means of instruction.

ASSIGNMENTS:
Each student is required to produce a ministry project, not to exceed 20 pages, on a topic to be given out in the class. The student will be expected to utilize the tools and techniques discussed in the course in the development of their work. Each student will also be expected to develop a Leadership Development Study (LDS) using their own life and ministry as the point of focus.
