LG560: LATIN II. Marian Steinberg.


DESCRIPTION:

This course is an introduction to the phonology, morphology and syntax of ecclesiastical Latin with exercises in translation. The literature this quarter will be from Medieval writers.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
Translation skills are highly specialized but are not outside the métier of the minister or researcher. Anyone involved in explicating a life-style and thought system that is ancient is best equipped by understanding the ancient media; one of them is Latin.

COURSE FORMAT:
This course meets for only two hours a week. Thus considerable outside study and preparation is expected of the students.

REQUIRED READING:
Collins, John F. A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin. Washington, D.C.: Catholic University of American Press, 1985 (or latest edition).

ASSIGNMENTS:
Students will be responsible for translating the exercises from the text, some orally, some in writing. Longer additional pieces will be translated in writing. All work submitted will be assessed and graded.

PREREQUISITES:
LG559 Latin I.
