CN545: COUNSELING THE DEAF. R. Sue Garns.


DESCRIPTION:

Pastoral counseling in Deaf culture communities as a specialized ministry in the field of pastoral care will be explored didactically and practically in the preparation of persons who plan to do pastoral counseling. A survey of counseling theory from an integrative perspective, with attention to particular ministry issues, will be incorporated into a practical format in a community setting.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
To pastor a Deaf congregation effectively is to be available to people in life passages, in crises, and in changes faced throughout the life cycle. The pastoral counselor is able to offer effective therapeutic intervention and support to counselees and the family and friends surrounding them.

COURSE FORMAT:
Lecture, discussion, case studies, experiential exercises, and practice in role play simulated counseling circumstances. The course will meet for two weeks, Monday-Friday, three hours daily.

ASSIGNMENTS:
  1. Attend all lecture sessions and participate in experiential processes.

  2. Complete all required reading.

  3. Prepare a brief presentation to be given in class on a specific area of pastoral care and counseling such as depression, alcoholism, divorce, sexual addiction, anger, isolation, etc. to be followed by a 10-12 page research paper due at the end of the quarter.

PREREQUISITES:
Proficiency in American Sign Language is required.
