CO522: NARRATIVE COMMUNICATION IN A VISUAL AGE (4 Units: 160 Hours). Ken U. Fong.

DESCRIPTION: This course explores why narrative (story) moves people in ways that lecturing didactically often does not. It will equip students to create and deliver narrative lessons that aim to capture imaginations in compelling, memorable ways, utilizing beautifully-designed digital slides to enhance the narrative.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students completing this course will demonstrate the ability to (1) identify and define the essential elements of compelling stories, including the 4 Dimensional Narrative Framework; (2) apply these elements and the 4DNF in crafting and delivering narrative lessons; (3) design visually impactful computer-slides to enhance the narrative they are telling; and (4) confidently deliver narrative lessons using the visuals they’ve designed to enhance and amplify their content.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three-hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours. Classes will involve lectures and demonstrations, online forums, technical instruction seminars, and student-presentations.
