WS852/552: HERMENEUTICAL ISSUES IN PREACHING AND WORSHIP (4 Units: 172 hours; 6 Units: 380 Hours). Todd E. Johnson.

DESCRIPTION: This is a doctoral level seminar, open at the 500-level to a limited number of advanced master’s level students by special permission. This seminar explores hermeneutical issues in relation to all aspects of preaching and worship as interpretive practices of the church. The biblical adage “to be in the world and not of it” has had a wide-ranging history of interpretation. As Christendom appears more distant in the rear view mirror of the church, this concept’s interpretation and application becomes more important. In particular, it raises questions about Christianity being a multinational and multicultural faith that has tended to be narrow in the range of in its expressions of worship and preaching. Yet at the same time every Christian church has inherited some aspect of the Christian tradition as expressed in its proclamation and rituals. Only in the last quarter century have issues of faith and culture come front and center in liturgical scholarship the way it has in missiology. This class will explore the relationship of cultures, their values, symbols, and rituals to Christian worship and its interpretation and proclamation of the Gospel.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: After successfully completing such a course, a student will have:

1) Demonstrated capacities to reflect theologically on all aspects of preaching and worship as hermeneutical practices of the church;

2) Demonstrated an historical understanding of the range of hermeneutical issues that have informed worship and preaching and be able to identify key figures, movements, and schools of thought that contribute to this conversation in contemporary settings;

3) Demonstrated skills in reading and critically evaluating primary hermeneutical and homiletical or liturgical sources in light of their historical contexts and contemporary settings;

4) Articulated a theology of the practice of preaching which is situated within biblical and theological hermeneutics;

5) Developed resources for teaching and learning the integral relation of hermeneutics and liturgics or homiletics as part of a larger course or a stand–alone course; (800 level only) and,

6) Demonstrated capacities for developing strategies appropriate to teaching and learning preaching or worship as a hermeneutical practice within a variety of contexts and settings.
