MT503: THEOLOGY OF MISSION (4 Units: 160 hours). Kirsteen Kim.


DESCRIPTION: In this course, students will be introduced to the theology of mission from an evangelical Protestant perspective. Through analysis of key sources and investigation of scholarly contributions which left a lasting impact on 21st century missiology, students will explore Trinitarian perspectives on the missio Dei, the reign of God, and contextual theology.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will (1) explain the development of mission theology; (2) critically evaluate evangelical theological perspectives on the missio Dei; (3) appreciate evangelical mission theology in historical and ecumenical perspective; and (4) assess the implications of evangelical mission theology for contemporary mission tasks.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets twice weekly for two hour sessions for a total of 40 instructional hours in the classroom for lecture and discussion.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT (160 hours total):

  1. 1,221 pages of required reading [80 hours].
  2. Class attendance and participation (20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-4] [40 hours].
  3. Two 600-word book reviews of any of the required or recommended reading (20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1 and #4] [10 hours].
  4. Signature assignment proposal: 1,000-word draft, including title, summary of argument, outline, and bibliography (of works additional to the course reading). (15%) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-4] [5 hours].
  5. Signature assignment: 2,500-3000 word final paper which integrates the course material to develop a theology of mission for a particular mission practice. The following mission practices are suggested: evangelism, church-planting, interreligious dialogue, youth outreach, children at risk, poverty alleviation and development, mission through the arts. Other practices could be addressed by agreement with the instructor (45%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-4] [25 hours].

PREREQUISITES: None. Recommended in first year of study.
