LD516: WOMEN IN CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP (4 Units: 160 hours). Karen E Parchman, Ph.D.


DESCRIPTION: After exploring a variety of theological and social contributions of women on behalf of the mission of God in the world, this course will address the intersection of contemporary and contextual leadership models with women’s experience and development. The goal of the course is to reflect critically on the effects of gender identity and the women’s ways of leading God’s people for transformation and mission.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated (1) The ability to articulate the theological basis for women in leadership; (2) An understanding of women’s unique contribution to leadership in the mission of God historically and biblically; (3) An awareness of the cultural, ethnic, and theological diversity of women in leadership, both historically and in contemporary culture; and (4) an ability to critically reflect on gender and leadership for transformational discipleship, mission, and ministry.

COURSE FORMAT: This is a hybrid course, meaning that it is a ten-week course with nine weeks of online instruction and one week of classroom instruction during week seven of the quarter. Classroom and online instruction will include lecture and discussion for a total of 40 instructional hours. Students are required to interact with the material, with each other, and with the instructor regularly through online discussions, reading, and other assignments that promote active learning.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. 1000 pages of required reading. [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2, 3]. [57 hours].
  2. Classroom: students will engage, reflect, create (utilizing instruction, participation, presentation, discussion, engaging practice-based theology cycle for theological reflection) [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1, #2, #3, #4]. [20 hours in class, 12 hours online].
  3. Completion of an Interview and reflection paper with a female leader in a Christian context. This may be a woman in church leadership or in a faith-based organization [500 word essay + interview notes] (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, #3]. [2 hours + 4 hours = 6 hours].
  4. Two fieldwork activities and reflection papers relating to the intersection of gender and ethnicity in leadership, and gender and generational diversity. [500 word essays] (15%) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, #3]. [6 hours+ 6 hours = 12 hours total]
  5. Seven Connecting Forums online with other students. (15%) [This assignment is related to learning outcome #3, #4]. [15 hours].
  6. A research essay and presentation on a woman leader, to be agreed upon with the Professor. The presentation will be given during the week in Pasadena, and the essay turned in at the end of the week [1,500 words] (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1, #2, #3]. [18 hours].
  7. Signature Assignment: Final Paper [1,500 words] (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1, #2, #3, #4]. [18 hours].

PREREQUISITES: None.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Option to meet the C5 requirement in the 120 MDiv and 80 MATM Programs (Fall 2015).
