TC591: THEOLOGY AND THE ARTS CAPSTONE COHORT (4 units: 160 hours). Maria Fee.


DESCRIPTION: The master’s project is an integrative and culminating portion of the MA-WTA, MA-WMM, and MAT-TA degree programs. It provides students the opportunity to carefully and reflectively integrate their course work with their particular areas of artistic, ministerial, and/or cultural interest. The incorporation of applied fine and worship arts, course work, research, spirituality, and theological reflection lead to the development of a summative thesis or project (which will be undertaken in the Winter quarter).

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students who pass this course will have demonstrated that they (1) know the work of others in the integration of theology and the arts; (2) understand the range of artistic identities and vocations within the church and can articulate their own relationship to these vocations; (3) recognize theological themes and issues relating to the production of artistic and/or liturgical projects; (4) can think critically and theologically in the production of their own creative projects; and (5) are prepared to move forward in the development of a summative project or final paper.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three-hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. DLAs-Research in action for proposal/project. This includes readings, sketches, models, and preliminary drafts. (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, #4, #5]. [10 hours].

  2. Class attendance, participation in discussions, assigned readings [900 pages] [90 hours] and homework projects [10 hours] (20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, #2, #3, #4].

  3. Two class presentations (15% each). The first presentation is a review and response of one of the assigned readings. [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #3, #4]. The second presentation concerns research of examples and models in the student’s genre/art form. [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1]. [12 hours].

  4. Proposal for Master’s project. This includes artist statement, annotated bibliography, resource list, and timeline dates (15 pages). (40%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #5]. [38 hours].

PREREQUISITES: Students are eligible (and encouraged) to take this course after completing 40 units of their degree program.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Option to meet the TH5 requirement in the 120 MDiv Program.

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
