NE517: NEW TESTAMENT BOOK STUDY: JAMES AND 1 PETER (4 Units: 160 hours). Matthew Ryan Hauge.


DESCRIPTION: A close reading of James and 1 Peter, with special attention given to their social, political, religious, literary, and geographical contexts.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will have demonstrated the ability (1) to interpret James and 1 Peter within their socio-historical, literary, and canonical contexts; (2) to identify central issues in the critical study of James and 1 Peter; (3) to articulate primary theological and ethical concerns of James and 1 Peter; and (4) to use English based language tools for interpreting the text; and (5) to interpret this text for faithful use of Scripture in their own lives and ministries.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets daily as a two week intensive for four hour sessions for a total of 40 instructional hours in the classroom for lecture and discussion.

REQUIRED READING: 867 pages required.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Preparation for each meeting of the course by carefully reading the assigned texts in the book of James and 1 Peter and comparing one’s observations with three of the required texts. For James, consult Levine, Painter and deSilva, and Perkins. For 1 Peter, consult Callan and Watson, Levine, and Perkins. Students will submit a journal of their observations from their reading of the primary and secondary sources (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5]. [58 hours + 10 hours].
  2. Two interpretive 1000-word exercises on selected passages from the book of James and 1 Peter (15%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1, 2, and 4] [12 hours].
  3. Two 5-page critical book reviews of Smith and Wilken (20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome 3] [10 hours].
  4. One 3,000-word research essay on a pericope in the book of James or 1 Peter (35%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5]. [30 hours].

PREREQUISITES: BI500 or NE502; NT500 or NS500 or NS501.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Counts as a biblical elective for the 120 MDiv, 80 MAT, and 80 MATM Programs (Fall 2015). Meets the NTBK requirement for the MAT Program (Winter 2010).

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
