ST544: ASIAN AND ASIAN AMERICAN THEOLOGIES (4 Units: 160 hours). Amos Yong & Daniel D. Lee.


DESCRIPTION: This course critically engages methodologies and approaches in Asian and Asian American theologies by the reading of key works of representative theologians. It will explore their operating philosophical, political, and cultural presuppositions as well as their existential and pastoral concerns. Students will be tasked to integrate the key insights and lessons from these theologies for their understanding of their own identity, theology, and ministry.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course students will demonstrate: (1) basic historical understanding of the development in Asian and Asian American theologies; (2) capacity to recognize intersectional aspects of Asian American contexts, experiences, and writings based on race/ethnic/gender/generational/class dynamics; (3) an ability to critical evaluate Asian American theologies; (4) practical application of Asian and Asian American theological ideas for discipleship, mission, and ministry.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours. Class times will include lectures and reflective discussions of materials and experiences.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Class attendance and participation (5% of final grade) [30 hours].
  2. 1,055 pages of required reading (5% of final grade) [70 hours].
  3. 300-word weekly posts and two 100-word weekly replies (20% of final grade). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-3]. [20 hours, includes 10 hours of DLAs].
  4. Contextual analysis paper (20% of final grade). Choose from a number of experiences including pilgrimage to Manzanar internment camp, church visits, sermon analysis, or personal interview and write a 1,000-word reflection. [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 3-4] [10 hours].
  5. A 3000-word research paper (50% of final grade). [This assignment is related to learning outcome 1-4]. [30 hours].

PREREQUISITES: None.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Option to meet the TH4, C1 or C5 requirements in the 120 MDiv Program and the 80 MAT Program (Fall 2015). Option to meet requirement in Asian American Contexts emphasis.

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
