LG512C: BEGINNING GREEK (4 Units: 160 hours). Bill Horst.


DESCRIPTION: This course is the third quarter of Fuller’s introductory Greek sequence. Students will read Greek texts from across the New Testament, increasing their skills in reading and translating.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will have demonstrated the ability (1) to translate from the Greek NT using appropriate tools; (2) to translate NT passages of varying authorship, difficulty levels, and genres; (3) to defend translation decisions; and (4) to explain the function of various noun, pronoun, adjective, and verb forms.

COURSE FORMAT: The class meets twice each week for two-hour sessions for a total of 40 instructional hours in the classroom for lecture and discussion.This course normally requires eight hours per week outside of class (two hours for each class hour) spent in studying the textbook lessons, learning Greek vocabulary and forms, and doing translation exercises.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT: The student is expected to attend each class session and to have completed the assignments prior to the class session. The course grade will be based on:

  1. Weekly translation of passages (10%) [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1, 2, 3, 4, and 5]. [70 hours].

  2. Weekly classroom participation (10%) [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1, 2, 3, 4, and 5].

  3. Weekly quizzes (15%) [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1, 2, 3, 4, and 5]. [10 hours].

  4. Textual Analysis Projects (#1=10%, #2=25%) [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1, 2, 3, 4, and 5]. [30 hours].

  5. Final Exam (30%) [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1, 2, 3, 4, and 5]. [10 hours].

PREREQUISITES: LG512A and B, or placement by examination.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets the core requirement in Greek (GK) in the 144 MDiv program.
