ML538/638/KM788: CROSS CULTURAL LEADERSHIP (4/8 unit: 168 Hours). Sherwood Lingenfelter and Mantae Kim.


DESCRIPTION: The subject of this course is the cross-cultural study of leadership, i.e., how leaders lead followers in diverse cultural settings. While individuals vary significantly in their capabilities and skills to lead others, each social setting places demands, constraints, and requirements of legality and procedure upon leaders. All leaders must work within the bounds of these variables, regardless of their personal gifts. The lectures in the course are illuminated by the theory and data of social and political anthropology.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: (1) employ the theory students will reflect upon and complete their personal cultural leadership profile; (2) define issues of power in leadership; (3) explore how material and spiritual power are allocated to leaders and employed by them to exercise control over others; and (4) complete an assessment of value conflicts in multicultural teams, and frame a ministry strategy that adapts to cross-cultural challenges.

COURSE FORMAT: The course is a five-day intensive course meeting 8 hours a day for a total of 40 instructional hours in the classroom for lecture and discussion.It follows a lecture/discussion format. Students should expect to readassignments and do significant personal and group reflection in the intensive schedule and write a case study of ministrycrisis at the end of the course.
