PM544: ASIAN AMERICAN CONTEXTS AND MISSIONAL LEADERSHIP (4 Units: 160 hours). Ken Fong.


DESCRIPTION: The course teaches students to engage organizational change in Asian American congregations and organizations. The course will specifically address ways to engage the context within which the church or organization exists, with attention to missional praxis.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a result of taking this course, students will: (1) Demonstrate an understanding of Christian leadership toward missional praxis in Asian American settings; (2) Will be able to reflect theologically about leadership and character; (3) Will be able to describe the implications of this learning for their own current or anticipated contexts.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three-hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Reading - 1,071 pages of required reading as assigned from required texts [61 hours].

  2. Writing - Nine reflection papers of two pages each based on each week’s reading/videos, answering the following questions in order: a) What does this mean?; b) How does it fit in the larger argument?; c) How will it make you do something different? (50%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #2]. [54 hours, including 10 hours of DLAs]

  3. Final Exam - Out of 75 terms that have been discussed in this class, select 10 and answer the following questions: a) What does this mean (definition)?; b) Why is this important, especially to you and your anticipated context?; c) Give an example from your context. (50%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1 and #3]. [15 hours].

PREREQUISITES: None.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Option to meet the LDR requirement for the 120 MDiv and 80 MATM Programs (Fall 2015). Meets 144 MDiv core requirement in Pastoral Ministry and Theology (MIN6). It also serves as the Capstone Course for those enrolled in the Asian American Contexts Emphasis.
